My last post was a surface review of a learn to play guitar lessons online guitar course. I had just looked over the course and with excitement took a fast look at it, and that is what I reported. Most of it was on how much I liked the 400 plus page book that comes with the courses.

This is my first impression of Guitar Lessons for Beginners on DVD Learn at home. Amazing Guitar Secrets Online Guitar Course, I have only watched the online guitar DVD’s one time so far. This seems to be the real deal, so I expect to have to watch the course a few times, since I don’t get anything the first time.

The first thing is about the name. There are no ”amazing guitar secrets”, the information provided in this online guitar lessons course is basic music theory, explained to you the way he see it, in terms you will understand, especially on the learn guitar DVD’s.

Funny that the name insinuates these are ‘’secrets”, when in reality this is the type of information you are taught in any respected music institution with a music conservatory. It is pretty much standard procedure to teach music using a certain proven method at all music schools. Partly to keep tuition costs down in terms of books and to keep the programs consistent.

About 99% percent of the other online guitar courses leave out bits and pieces that make all the difference. This is a sign of someone who may be a good guitar player, but does not have a solid teaching and knowledge background. There are plenty of ”guitar teachers” who are putting out bad courses, which ultimately can sour you on your endeavor to learning to play guitar, and can set you back in regards to having to relearn anything you were taught wrong.

Realistically speaking, the learn to play guitar ‘fast’ courses actually slow you down. There is no fast way to become a great guitar player, wothout putting your time in, start with some easy to learn guitar chords and easy guitar songs you can learn and play in a few months. Nothing like the feeling of playing a few notes for an appreciative audience.

Teaching is an art form in itself. a person can be a top line guitar teacher and a so so guitar player, and, one may be a top notch guitar player who can’t teach worth a hoot. Don’t confuse the two. A good teacher can transfer his wisdom to you in a manner you understand easily, and it is not important if they are a good guitar player or not if they can teach you how to play the guitar. Although I have been playing the guitar for a long time, I’m always seeking more learning information. It was becoming quite painful and creating too much anxiety spending so much time sifting through the endless online learn to play guitar lessons claiming everything from play like Jimi Hendrix in 30 days to learn to play easy guitar songs overnight.
I’m looking for a certain type of lesson. I have been a student of the guitar since I was 11 years old. I’m 56 years old now. My first four years of guitar lessons were classical guitar. In essence the course that arrived has solid well structured information in several well planned DVD’s and a huge 400 plus page book with big writing. The book also comes on a CD, so you can view it on your computer. The best part is the teacher has an etched in granite structure of teaching that is almost exactly like taking up where i left off. And is excellent at putting everything in understandable terms. In fact, one of the basic music theorems, which I have never been able to understand, was explained in a manner that I totally understand . The course was worth it just for that. He also has a support phone number given out to course owners for more information, free.
I really think that the days of actually driving to a guitar lesson four times a week and paying from $75 .00 to more than $100.00 per month is going to become less popular. I love having my guitar course and information right in front of my face and being able to replay it or look back as many times as necessary to understand it. That is real important to me since I rarely remember anything the first time around.
I don’t think I’m the only one who would rather stay at home and learn how to play the guitar than traipsing around town to a music studio every week. Think about all the money you will save in the long-run. Not that it is a cheap course by my standards, but over the long-run, a great deal of money will be saved by not going to a lesson every week. It’s possible you may advance even faster, if you have a built in knack for playing the guitar, why hold yourself back by having a guitar teacher throttle your creative needs and unusual skills. If you are not gifted (like me) than you can take as much time to go over essentials until you get it. Remember it is not a race.

Last month, I discovered a new blues guitar online guitar lesson

When I first started to play the guitar I took lessons from a local guitar teacher with a really good reputation. Sure enough not only was he a good teacher, but he is one of the great guitar players, I mean with the Eric Clapton class of skills. I took lessons from him for three years. He taught me so much of the normal beginners stuff which included an understanding of scales and modes it became old after a while, I learned them real well, time to move on. The things that he taught me that were most important to me were some Jim Hendrix techniques that seemingly were not available to most folks because not too many people studied Hendrix enough to duplicate his techniques.

I practiced every day for over an 2 hours (I still play, practice every day for a few hours) , it took years, literally, to even get good enough at the Hendrix maneuvers to make sense out of them. I still practiced what he gave me in our lessons. The problem was that I needed variety. I wanted to be a bluesman, which I can say I am now, but I needed other resources to get there.

After scouring every resource known to mankind I found several internet sites that offered excellent guitar tabs and a full line and variety of online guitar lessons. In essence, I probably would have learned to play more songs if I had started my guitar endeavor using online guitar lessons and learning to read guitar tabs first. Richard does not teach songs or how to read music. Don’t get me wrong, Richard taught me well and I don’t regret a second of his lessons, in fact we became really good friends anyway. I know he is impressed with my abilities now, and he is proud to claim he was the one who taught me, that is fine, I love Richard and don’t ever want to hurt his feelings.

As far as I’m concerned guitar players are some of the most passionate people in the world. Guitars are an extension of ourselves. What we may love and play all the time, another person may think is a piece of junk. That is why it is so important to treat every  guitar in need of guitar repairs with the same delicate and gentle touch I would use when I handle my Fender Eric Clapton Custom Shop Guitar. Guitar makers or ‘luthiers‘, have to have more than great skills and uncompromising craftsmanship, I call it ‘love’.

When you choose a guitar repair shop, you have no way determining what type of outfit you are dealing with unless you get a personal recommendation, or see some of the work performed in the past on other guitars. Generally speaking there are only a small number of luthiers or guitar makers in any area. In fact, the best guitar repair shops are not always listed in the phone book. Most luthiers of that caliber don’t need more business, they have an established clientele already.

That is not to say you can’t find a good repair shop. As a matter of interest there are two competent shops that only do guitar repairs and don’t sell guitars and guitar tabs in my town of Fort Pierce Florida, 34982 (Experience Guitar Repair and Setup). I’m one of them of course and I’m in the phone book. The other guitar maker, who is more experienced than me is not listed, rock-stars send him guitars from all over, he does not need any more business. We are friends and when I go over there I pay attention. You never know what type of unspoken information you  might pickup.

The point is that you deserve the best, and being choosy is a good idea. Really good Guitar Repairs can be found with some research. Guitar repairs are similar to actually playing the guitar. People say “the guitar is the easiest instrument to learn to play bad, and the hardest instrument to learn to play good”.
